September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

A reminder for men to understand their personal risk, pay attention to symptoms and speak with a clinician about whether prostate screening is appropriate.

Start with a conversation about your individual risk.

Prostate health is not the same for every man. Age, family history, previous health conditions and symptoms can change what a clinician recommends. If you are concerned about prostate cancer or urinary symptoms, a medical review is the right starting point.

Symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, a weak stream, blood in urine, unexplained weight loss, persistent pelvic or back pain, or a major change in urinary habits should not be self-diagnosed. These symptoms can have several causes, so assessment matters.

Screening decisions should be made with a qualified healthcare professional who can explain potential benefits, limitations and the next step if a result needs follow-up.
